Each free message counts, so put everything the model needs into one prompt instead of spreading it over several turns.

• Paste the full code snippet, error message or document section in the first message, then ask for the fix and the explanation together.
• Say how long the answer should be (“in five bullet points”, “under 150 words”) so the first reply is the one you can use.
• Ask for several options in one go, for example three subject lines or two versions of a paragraph.
• Use your free messages on the tasks where Mistral Large 4 scores best in Mistral’s benchmarks: code fixes, security questions, legal and finance analysis.
• Save a long reply you like; asking again for the same content spends another message.

Is the Mistral Large 4 API free?

No, Mistral Large 4 is billed per token on the API. Mistral’s pricing page lists it at $1.36 per 1M input tokens and $4.18 per 1M output tokens, currently cut 50% to $0.68 and $2.09 for a limited time with no end date announced. OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway charge the same sale price, and none of them lists a free variant of the model.

Mistral Studio opens new API accounts in a free mode with no credit card required, subject to usage and rate limits, according to Mistral’s quickstart docs. Mistral’s pricing for Mistral Large 4 is per token, and Mistral has not said whether preview models are included in free mode, so plan on a paid key for API work. Is Mistral Large 4 free in Vibe (formerly Le Chat)?

Not as far as Mistral has announced. Le Chat was renamed Vibe on Aug 12, 2026, with Work, Code and Chat modes, and Mistral’s Large 4 announcement and help center do not mention the model in Vibe as of Oct 6, 2026. Will the open weights make it free?

The download will be free, running it will not be cheap. Mistral plans to publish the weights on Hugging Face by the end of October 2026 (repo ETA Oct 31), but the license has not been announced, so commercial terms are still open.

The hardware is the real cost. At 1.05T parameters the weights alone are about 1.05 TB in FP8, which fits an 8× H200 or 8× B200 server, and about 0.53 TB at 4-bit, which still needs something like 8× H100 80 GB. When it makes sense to go Pro
